red-faced after a shocking stunt in which he was tricked into reading about her threesome live on-air.
The awkward family exchange occurred on Tuesday’s Kyle and Jackie O Show when the radio queen and co-host Kyle Sandilands were discussing Jackie’s new memoir The Whole Truth.
Before getting her father on the line, Jackie explained to listeners
that she was about to get an unsuspecting Tony to read an excerpt that detailed a night
of passion with then boyfriend ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil and a 19-year-old stripper.
‘So this is going back to my Gold Coast days when I had met
Phil who [later became] my first husband,’ the 49-year-old explained.
‘I had only just met him at this point. I think [we were] two months into seeing each other.’
Jackie then prompted her unprepared father to read the excerpt
that detailed Phil’s living situation with the stripper and another, rather unsavory
‘stoner’ flatmate.
‘He lived in a place in Main Beach that
felt like a motel with two weird flatmates. One was
a stoner guy who would sit there blazed out of his
gourd,’ Tony read from Jackie’s book.

Despite the raciness of the content he had just read from his daughter’s
book, Tony admitted he was not shocked by the revelations.
‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.
‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re talking about.
If it was somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
I’d be so excited.
‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s
mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door,
she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate
was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,
‘ a shocked Tony read.
The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw her
secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.
During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height
of her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills
and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge –
The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him
being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is
‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy
on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas
trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said
he was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals
that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird,
who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed,
it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday
night, just before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was
still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times
with public figures and leaders who struggle to see
their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’
he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack,
Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if
the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also
taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which
is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private
holidays when you were the Transport Minister? The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying
to avoid saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to
the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people
are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest
blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say …
anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony
Albanese. This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it.
They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here trying to get a scalp.
That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’
he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long
time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him,
is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and
sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime
Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front
row of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime
Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example
of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their
office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and
if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue
those types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a
travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to
go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane
on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove
a single tree from the driveway of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked by their local council.
Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court, and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to remove a
single peppermint tree growing in the middle of their driveway.
The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined
suburb overlooking Perth’s Freshwater Bay for $20.1million in August.
They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused the request on the grounds the tree
was not dead or deceased.
‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is
unusual,’ Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting.
‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree
in the middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to reverse out.’
The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be removed on the condition they paid a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway.
They will also need to plant two replacement trees
on their property.

odd placement also made it difficult to spot cars turning the corner at a nearby intersection with Bay
View Terrace.
After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the meeting, councillor Douglas Jackson said it was a
‘good outcome’.
‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or expectation, but also
matches the council’s needs at the same time by ensuring that there is tree cover
on the verge of that property,’ he said.
Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make
it an offence to damage or remove any mature trees on private property without council
approval.
Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of Peppermint Grove would
‘take a common sense approach’ to the issue.
‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.
I’ve always been on the record that we need local governments to take a common sense approach to issues,’ Mr Carey told the West
Australian.
‘And I understand people are passionate about trees.
But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic
outcomes.’
According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion –
which is built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River –
the sprawling Federation-style property was built in around 1904.

It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship with Prince began or ended as he was dating another one of the stars
of Purple Rain during the making of the film, Susan Moonsie.
Prince and Beyonce famously joined forces onstage at the 2004 Grammy Awards,
performing a medley that included his iconic 1984 single Purple Rain.
Their duet also included her fan favorite number Crazy In Love, which saw him accompany her on the electric guitar.
Afterwards, Prince gave an interview in which he shared his
appraisal of Beyonce’s musical abilities when they worked together.
‘I was really curious as to how much she knew musically, and I was really pleased to find out that she knew a lot about
scales – Mixolydian scales and Egyptian styles and different things like that,’
he said.

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a
Prime Minister and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was
his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.
However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’
with Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.
In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas chief.
When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr
Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity, having
been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming
Prime Minister.
‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr
Albanese said.
That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr
Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at
the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.
In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet
with one arm around the prime minister and the other
around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.
Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.

Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM bursting into laughter.
Even when Scott Morrison was PM, Mr Joyce enjoyed an apparently close relationship with
Mr Albanese as the pair stood close together at the launch of
the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018.
During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr
Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.
Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to
the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.
‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said.
However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister
on the controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar
Airways out of domestic routes.
It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also
a Chairman’s Lounge member.

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese
received 22 upgrades from economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them.
Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while
in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were
‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was
for work purposes and all were ‘declared in the appropriate
way’.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce.
Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese
had directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the
most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those
questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m not aware
of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.
It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge
The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city
of Newcastle.
‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through
calls – we discussed the first flight from Australia
to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah
Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar
domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s office
had nothing to do with the decision.

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would

Aston replied.
He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had seemingly been sailing
through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to
block Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas
the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to
do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

Sky New host Sharri Markson on Monday night labeled Mr Joyce
as ‘basically Albanese’s personal travel agent.’
‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy airfare.
They’d never be able to afford the luxury of business class.
It’s out of our reach,’ she said.
‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of dollars worth of free upgrades
to business class? The revelations puts the
decision he made as transport minister and prime
minister under a cloud.
‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also
politically lethal. Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who made it.
But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie enjoying the perks of
public office.’
Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s apparent
close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader in a
trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a case brought
by the union with Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star
Neil Mitchell.
‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.
‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as
a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

With Halloween quickly approaching, Terrifier 3 slashed its
way to the top of the box office over the weekend. The plot about a deadly clown named Art, determined
to literally kill the Christmas holiday spirit in a small town, earned $18.3 million at the
box office according to The Numbers.
The low-budget thriller, made for about $2 million and written and directed
by Damien Leone, is an un-rated blood fest, which has received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences have ‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.
Holding on to second place was The Wild Robot, an animated adventure about a robot named Roz who is stranded on a small
island after being shipwrecked. There, she bonds with the animals, who are her
new neighbors, and begins taking care of an orphaned goose.

Joaquin Phoenix has revealed that he spoke
with filmmaker Christopher Nolan about playing Joker which ultimately went to Heath
Ledger.
The 50-year-old actor – whose latest flick Joker: Folie À Deux could be streamed now – got candid about
potentially playing the supervillain before he actually
portrayed him.
Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as he revealed that he spoke
to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan about portraying
Joker over a decade before.
He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for a number of reasons.
I wasn’t ready then.
‘That’s one of those things sometimes where you go: “Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. Terrifier 3 dethrones Joker: Folie À Deux as box office champ
The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report,
saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend
where rumor is reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue
throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally
after two weeks of release.
In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically
and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

32%.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with director
Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn
and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last
month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy
in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was
Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the
film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel,
while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of
Warner Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to
Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who
took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this
is kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with
Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to
filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget

a shocking stunt in which he was tricked into reading about her threesome live on-air.
The awkward family exchange occurred on Tuesday’s Kyle and Jackie O Show when the radio queen and co-host Kyle Sandilands
were discussing Jackie’s new memoir The Whole Truth.
Before getting her father on the line, Jackie explained
to listeners that she was about to get an unsuspecting Tony to read an excerpt that detailed a night of passion with then boyfriend ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil and a 19-year-old stripper.
‘So this is going back to my Gold Coast days when I had met Phil
who [later became] my first husband,’ the 49-year-old explained.
‘I had only just met him at this point.
I think [we were] two months into seeing each other.’
Jackie then prompted her unprepared father to read the excerpt that detailed Phil’s living
situation with the stripper and another, rather unsavory ‘stoner’ flatmate.

‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.
‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re talking
about. If it was somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
I’d be so excited.
‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things
happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s
mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the
door, she put her face to the screen to see inside and that
flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony read.
The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long
battle with drugs which saw her secretly go to rehab at The
Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.
During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch
clothing line pleaded not guilty Tuesday in US federal court to charges of sex
trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.
Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer James Jacobson allegedly used a “casting couch”
ploy to groom aspiring male models to attend sex parties at which victims were plied with alcohol and drugs.
After his arrest in October in Florida with
Jeffries, Smith was held in custody in New York. Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central
Islip on Long Island, to the east of New York City.
Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond
put up by Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New York.
An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared
to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to
his ankle.

Another hearing is scheduled for December 10 for Smith,
Jeffries and Jacobson.
Jeffries, 80, was released on a $10 million bond in late October.
Jeffries, who served as CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch from 1992 to 2014,
is accused of creating and maintaining a ring that
recruited young men to have sex with him and Smith.
Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and March
2015 Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of “force, fraud and coercion” to traffic men in a
sprawling prostitution enterprise.
Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors
suggest the scale was probably much larger and have appealed for witnesses and
victims to come forward.
Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries and Smith and to hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.
Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.
Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as the other defendants and
was released on half a million dollars bond in October.

Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades, was the perfect place to unveil Joker
five years ago; and last month, at the venerable film festival there, it was
followed by the sequel, Joker: Folie À Deux.
The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title role, this time joined by
Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.
We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role.
They’d have loved her at St Trinian’s.
This film is audaciously different in style from the
original, not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all
the same.
Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be
judged sane enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status with fellow
prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the
vulnerable fellow behind it? Either way, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which keeps being billed as a musical.
It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another.
And there are a couple of swooning dance routines that make
them look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land (2016).
Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The
Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire
to their prison wing.
The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver skilfully toy
with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way the narrative is going to go,
it confounds us by wheeling off in another direction.

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while
this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is
still a gripping film about mental illness; not quite comparable
with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too far off.
– Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New
York City. The real thing is the backdrop
to A Different Man, another absorbing story, splendidly written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner struggling with
life.
In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan), an aspiring
actor, that’s apparently because he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos seem to be about as far as he can get in the acting world.
There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980), and for that matter of recent release The Substance, in which Demi Moore’s character, a former
movie star ‘disfigured’ by a few wrinkles, finds a way of transforming into her own younger self.

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has
presented itself’. In other words, medical science has found a
way to reverse his condition, turning him into a perfectly attractive middle-aged man.
But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger, is that Edward,
despite his radical change in appearance, is still the same person underneath that he
always was.
In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic neighbour, Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), a
playwright. Now he is able to fall into bed with her, and to star in a play she has written about their relationship, little though
she knows of his real identity.
I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire (1993) as
Edward’s new persona fundamentally fails to alter who he
actually is. This is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald, an Englishman with
the same condition Edward once had, but popular, witty,
confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer from a disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).
Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under The Skin (2013).
Which is apt, because this picture, too, is about
what’s under the skin.

The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world premiere of Blitz, director
Steve McQueen’s drama set in London as the Luftwaffe’s bombs
rain down night after night.
Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented actresses of her generation, plays Rita, an East End mum whose
son George (Elliott Heffernan) goes missing. It sounds intriguing even without
the casting of The Jam’s former front man Paul Weller — in his feature film debut
— as Rita’s father.
I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere, Joy, the story of the three brilliant British medical pioneers whose
work on IVF led to the world’s first ‘test-tube’ baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.

It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV
work on shows such as Sex Education and Catastrophe,
and stars Bill Nighy, James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie.
I have heard great things about Conclave, the adaptation of Robert Harris’s novel starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci.
A couple of new documentaries catch the eye, too. One of them is made by actress Sadie Frost,
whose directing debut was a film about Mary Quant.
This time she turns to another fashion icon of the 1960s, with a feature called Twiggy.
And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’ look at
the star’s life and career. It’s been made by his long-time partner David Furnish, so… we’ll
see.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market,
citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued
sale of several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.
